UNIT OF MAGNETIC POLE STRENGTH

The force between two point poles ๐ฆโ‚ and ๐ฆโ‚‚ held at a distance ๐ซ apart, in any medium is given by

F=m1ร—m24ฯ€โ‹…ฮผ0โ‹…ฮผrโ‹…r2N

If in the above relation we put

๐‘šโ‚ = ๐‘šโ‚‚ = 1   (say)
r = 1  m
๐œ‡แตฃ = 1   (say in vaccum)
๐œ‡โ‚€ = 4๐œ‹โจฏ 10โปโท   H/m

then

F=1ร—14ฯ€(4ฯ€ร—10โˆ’7)1ร—1=116ฯ€2ร—10โˆ’7

From the above, we may derive the definition of a unit pole as that pole which when placed one meter away in free space (vacuum) from an equal and similar pole experiences repulsive force of
116ฯ€2ร—10โˆ’7  newtons    or   14ฯ€ฮผ0  newtons.

This unit of pole strength is called Weber.
